Forget Resolutions – Connect With Your Why

Does this sound familiar?

“This year is going to be different!
I’m going to set my resolutions and make myself stick to them!
I’m determined to make them happen!”

I’ve said similar things to myself many times over the years – and heard so many of my friends and my clients say it too.

One of the reasons that New Year’s Resolutions don’t work is because they are often the things we think we “should” do. On top of that, we can get so caught up trying to achieve them and get them ticked off, we set unrealistic timescales and throw ourselves at them with brute force and willpower.

It’s often not a very pleasant journey, and if the destination isn’t somewhere we really want to be it’s no wonder we end up quitting and focusing our energy elsewhere.

So what’s the alternative?

Let me be clear – I’m not saying you should never set a resolution again – sometimes a goal can be really useful to focus the mind. What I’d like to do is introduce you to an approach which is less about willpower and more about inspiration.

When you connect with your why, you’re tuning in to who you are, whats important to you, the strengths you bring and the difference you want to make in the world.

Your why captures the essence of the things you enjoy, the things that excite you and the things you’re passionate about, and it evolves and grows with you along your journey.

Your why is both the destination you’d love to reach and the amazing adventure you take along the way.

When you know your why, you don’t need to push yourself to set goals and make resolutions in order to achieve, all you need to do is to follow the inspiration and take the next step in the direction you want to go.

What can you do to connect with your why?

I’ve shared some approaches which will get you started in previous blogs, particularly when encouraging you to discover your mission. Your mission is one way to express your why, turning it into something that you can share with the world.

But your why goes beyond your mission. It’s inside you. It’s your own personal understanding of you which can’t be expressed fully in words. It’s your own authentic expression of yourself.

And because of this there is no single way to find it – you need to discover your own way.

However, what I can do is point you in the right direction – showing you the range in which your mountain might lie, and sharing some tips on how to navigate your adventure.

And that’s what my “What’s Your Why” programme is all about.

It’s an online pre-recorded programme, taking you step-by-step through a series of exercises and introducing you to different approaches to find your why.
